Songs
I appreciate songwriters who focus on the listener's experience, with clear lyrics, good stories, and singable choruses. I offer these songs in that spirit.
Story Songs
Songs that tell a story can be fantastic — uplifting, riveting, illuminating, hilarious.
Why are they rarely written these days? We’re surrounded by great stories, in books, podcasts, movies, the news, friends and family, ... so much potential!
I try to notice when a story really grabs my attention, or brings tears or tingles or guffaws — it could become a song, and carry that feeling to listeners. Uplifting stories especially call me, since there’s so much gloom out there.
Please have a listen:
- Whale – It's a wide world, when you step away from home.
- A Million Bats – Spine-chilling or breathtaking?
- Where Do They Come From? – A mystery, unsolved despite 2500 years of effort.
- Paul Revere's Ride – A first-rate story, much richer than the simple version we learned in fourth grade.
- Sowadnehunk Falls – A surprising adventure from an 1870 Maine log drive.
And I invite you to join in! When you encounter a riveting or poignant story, ask yourself whether a song could carry that feeling to listeners. Then take a try at writing it! And send me the result. Or just the idea. I'd love to hear from you.
Other Songs
Some other songs I'm proud of, in a variety of styles:
- Out For a Stroll – a swingy, feel-good round.
- The Winter Solstice Alphabet – to celebrate the pleasures of winter.
- Dream, Dream – for my son.
- The Fonts – a bit of humor.
